I've made a lot of crisps, and this was truly one of the best ever. Ingredients 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup large-flake oats 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter. To make the topping-In a medium bowl, mix together all the topping ingredients with your fingers or a pastry cutter until small pebbly pieces of butter are distributed. Step 2 In another large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar. In a large bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons granulated. I saw some of the negative reviews, and I honestly think there must have been something done in the process of making it that went wrong - like mismeasuring or maybe using instant or fast cooking oats or something - in fact, someone said the crisp mix was powdery, which simply isn't possible if you've used good quality real rolled oats. Sliced apples tossed with cinnamon and baked under a topping of crisp oats. To make the filling-In a 9-inch pie pan thats 2 inches deep (or a similar baking pan), toss the apples with the sugar to taste, cinnamon, and flour. Filling: Place the apple chunks in a large bowl, along with the berries (if using). Directions Step 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

One note - I use thick rolled oats rather than the thin kind, which makes for a much more substantial and crispy crisp than if you use Quaker Oats or a similar thinly rolled oat. I read this wrong the first time I made it and didn't realize that half the crumbles go under the apples and half on top - I'd put it all under and none on top! This time I did it right, and I now agree that this recipe is absolutely WONDERFUL! I do want to cut down the sugar next time I make it, just for the health aspect rather than the taste - it wasn't overly sweet, but I'm just hoping that if I use sweet apples, it can use less sugar.
